About Us
Makini's is a Seattle-based tofu company founded by Makini Howell, a vegan chef, cookbook author, and Capitol Hill restaurateur with a lifelong love of bold, plant-based food. Raised by vegan parents, Makini grew up eating creative, flavorful plant-based meals inspired by her father. Today, Makini's honors that legacy by making vegan eating accessible, delicious, and genuinely easy for everyone.

Their product line centers on pre-seasoned, frozen tofu in a range of distinctive flavor profiles, including Baba's Taco Mix, Baba's Smoked, Jerk Spice, Shiitake Ginger, Southern Fried, Tofustrami, and Naked Tofu. Each variety is crafted to be kitchen-ready with minimal effort. Just defrost and cook. Making it approachable for weeknight dinners, meal prep, and minimal prep additions to menus.

Makini's tofu is produced in a custom-designed facility in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle. Every recipe is created and personally approved by Makini herself.
Practices
Makini's is committed to doing right by people and the planet at every step. Their tofu is made exclusively from organic, non-GMO, US-grown soybeans, processed in just three steps: soaking the beans, straining the soy milk (which is repurposed for other uses, minimizing waste), and seasoning before packaging and freezing. The result is a product that is free from artificial additives, fillers, or "weird stuff."

All products are certified organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, kosher, low-fat, vegan, and are rich in vitamins and protein. The company emphasizes tofu's environmental advantages over other protein sources such as significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions and far less water and land use compared to animal proteins.

Beyond the product itself, Makini's embeds a people-first philosophy into their business operations. They offer free childcare for employees, reflecting their commitment to being a kind and supportive employer. The company describes its culture as "countercultural" - leading with empathy, an others-first mindset, and a genuine sense of community stewardship.
