San Juan Sea Salt
City: Friday Harbor, WA,
County: San Juan

About Us
The business began when Brady discovered salt making in college and became fascinated by the formation of sea salt crystals, later imagining a more sustainable way to produce them. In 2012, Brady and Leah built their first evaporation house, made their first batch of salt, and successfully sold it at a farmers market, confirming the idea’s potential. Over the years, the company grew into a passionate team, expanded to 14 evaporation houses, developed dozens of products, and opened a retail store in Friday Harbor. Today, the business continues to evolve with a focus on creativity, sustainability, employee well-being, and future plans to share the salt-making process with visitors.
Practices
From May through September, the team gathers seawater from a private beach on San Juan Island and uses the sun alone to evaporate it in greenhouse salthouses, avoiding fossil fuels entirely. After about a month, each pond yields hundreds of pounds of mineral-rich sea salt that is harvested by hand. The salt is then dried, sifted, and transformed into a range of salts, seasonings, caramels, and baked goods. From seawater to finished products, the entire process is a hands-on, family-driven effort.
