Cherry Street Farm
Cherry Street Farm
About Us
Our Farm and Lab was born from our 501c3 nonprofit organization Hip Hop is Green. We have worked with thousands of youths all around America over the last 15 years. At Hip Hop is Green we are changing the future through our youth initiatives. You can read more at www.hiphopisgreen.com. We are excited to share our Youth Excellence Program with you as it is vital to building a sustainable future for all. Think of it like this, the girl scouts have girl scout cookies and at Cherry Street farm we have leafy greens that go to support our youth excellence program.
Cherry Street Farm is unique and the perfect place to train youth on sustainability and business, it is key to fulfilling Hip Hop is Green's mission of creating healthy communities by promoting plant-based, culturally relevant eating and teaching Black, Indigenous, and other youth of color (BIPOC) ages 12 to 20 traditional organic and innovative hydroponic farming methods and reconnecting them to a long tradition of BIPOC farmers. The Farm & Lab is a unique opportunity to showcase community-developed, innovative solutions for food security and food justice.
We believe that the best way to empower youth and prepare them to take charge of the future is by incorporating what resonates as “cool” and “hip” with experiences and education to learn about natural systems, innovative, ecologically sound food production techniques, marketing and sales, leadership skills, healthy eating, community activism, environmental justice, and entrepreneurship. It is imperative to educate the next generation to become stewards of their health and the health of the planet. We hope you feel the same way.
Practices
Situated on a 5,000-square-foot residential lot in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood of Seattle, the Farm will include raised garden beds, an outdoor classroom, a demonstration kitchen, and our flagship project, the Greenery S, a 320-square-foot hydroponic growing Lab.
We use a 3-part blend of Jack's nutrients to support plant growth. In hydroponics, synthetics are essentially required as it's not feasible to do carbon based nutrients without a substrate that it could cling to. However, we are effectively able to keep nearly all pests and plant pathogens out of our farm, eliminating the need for any sort of regular pesticide use. We don't have weeds and therefore don't have need for herbicides.
